A Moment in Alpha History: The Measure of a Man: Brother Mack Alexander Jarmon

There are Brothers whose presence fills a room with words, and there are Brothers whose lives speak so powerfully that words become unnecessary. Brother Mack Alexander Jarmon was one of those men.

Brother Jarmon was beloved among the ranks of Alpha men. He was initiated on May 1, 1975, beginning his journey in Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. From there, he wasted no time getting involved in the chapter. Serving on several committees—including Scholarship, Hosting Meetings, Fundraising, Galas, Fashion/Dance Fundraising, and local, area, and state Founders’ Day programs—he faithfully answered every call.

Eventually, he would move into the officer ranks as Assistant Treasurer, Treasurer, Dean of Pledgees, and ultimately Chapter President.

Brother Jarmon was also one of the original founding members of The Black and Gold Tones, who were widely sought after to provide musical selections during Founders’ Day programs and other special events. Even through music, he helped strengthen the bonds of Brotherhood and created memories that will forever remain a cherished part of the chapter’s history. His voice was more than a gift; it was a reflection of his pride and spirit for Alpha Phi Alpha, which he carried throughout his life.

He was a proud alumnus of North Carolina College, now North Carolina Central University (NCCU), graduating in 1963 with a degree in Political Science. On the “sloping hills and verdant green” campus, he participated in the Band, Choir, Political Science Club, Pre-Law Club, and Soil Conservation Club.

Even after graduation, Brother Jarmon gave generously as a member of the James E. Shepard Society of Donors. His love for his alma mater was only surpassed by his love for Alpha Phi Alpha.

He often said his most memorable moment was marrying his sweetheart, Sue, and their lifelong love story was evident through the many events they attended together while faithfully serving Alpha Phi Alpha and the community. Their marriage demonstrated the same loyalty and devotion that Brother Jarmon exhibited throughout every aspect of his life.

He worked diligently to ensure that Beta Theta Lambda Chapter represented the highest ideals of our Fraternity. His respect was not demanded—it was earned through years of faithful service, humility, and unwavering dedication.

Brother Jarmon was equally committed to improving the lives of young people, serving on the Board—and eventually as President—of the John Avery Boys and Girls Club. His commitment to youth reflected the opportunities he wanted future generations to receive, just as he had.

He was a devoted husband, father, Brother, and community leader.

Following his career with IBM, Brother Jarmon invested his time in Ideas Coffee House. One of his most meaningful contributions was something many might consider simple: providing coffee for chapter morning meetings.

It may seem like a small gesture, but Brother Jarmon understood that true service is not measured by recognition but by intention. His example reminds us that greatness is often found not in grand gestures but in the quiet, faithful acts that strengthen a Brotherhood.

He never sought applause or praise. He simply served because he loved his Brothers.

His quiet demeanor never diminished the strength of his presence. When he spoke, his deep voice carried authority and wisdom. When he sang, his rich bass-baritone voice stirred admiration. Yet beyond his talents and accomplishments, it was his character that truly defined him.

On the lighter side, Brother Jarmon earned the nickname Hotfoot for his exceptional dancing ability.

He embodied the true meaning of Brotherhood.

His legacy is reflected not only in his service to Alpha but also in his family, where his example inspired his sons to follow in his footsteps and become Alpha men themselves.

When I speak of Brother Mack Jarmon, I speak of devotion, faithfulness, service, family, and Brotherhood.

His contributions to Beta Theta Lambda Chapter were immeasurable.

In recognition of his lifelong commitment and extraordinary service, he received the Living Legacy Award in 2015—a fitting tribute to a man whose life exemplified the very best of Alpha.

In 2025, he celebrated 50 years of membership, earning the privilege of lighting the Lamp of Enlightenment for those who would follow.

Brother Jarmon’s commitment to Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and to Beta Theta Lambda Chapter reminds us that our time on earth is measured not by the number of years we live, but by what we do with those years.

His life stands as a lasting example of the principles we profess and the legacy we strive to leave behind.

This Moment in Alpha History, we honor Brother Mack Alexander Jarmon not only for what he accomplished, but for who he was:

May his life continue to inspire generations of Alpha men to lead with humility, serve with purpose, and love with the spirit of true Brotherhood.

God, in His infinite wisdom, has removed our beloved Brother and friend from the ranks of our Brotherhood and called him to our Chapter of Sweet Rest.

Brother Jarmon embodied what it means “To Be an Alpha Man.” He truly stood the “Test of a Man.” If you ever knew him, you understood “There Goes an Alphaman.” He loved the Goodwill of this House because “He Wasn’t Heavy, He Was Our Brother.”

“His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!'”
– Matthew 25:21
