Alpha Academy is the signature leadership development and college readiness program of the Beta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Designed for young men of color in grades 9–12 throughout Durham and the surrounding communities, the program educates, empowers, and exposes participants to the skills, resources, behaviors, and mentorship necessary for success in academics, leadership, college, and life.
Our mission is to develop confident, emotionally intelligent leaders who are prepared to excel in an ever-changing world. Through a comprehensive curriculum, Alpha Academy focuses on three key areas of growth: personal development, interpersonal relationships, and civic responsibility. Special emphasis is placed on Academic Excellence, Goal Setting, Leadership Development, Professional Development, Etiquette, Financial Literacy, Health and Wellness, and Community Engagement.
Participants will gain valuable insight into the college admissions process, including strategies for building strong applications, identifying scholarship opportunities, and successfully navigating the transition from high school to higher education. In addition, students will connect with mentors, professionals, and community leaders who serve as positive role models and examples of achievement.
Alpha Academy operates throughout the academic year, with monthly in-person sessions, virtual workshops, and enrichment activities designed to provide real-world exposure and hands-on learning experiences. Participants may also have opportunities to attend college tours, cultural events, leadership conferences, and community service projects.
